Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA)

ECAs and Clubs – Upper School

US and LS Activities Coordinator:             Simon Joyce

US students have many opportunities to pursue their interests in a wide variety of clubs and organizations.  The activities and clubs offered may change from year to year. For students interested in joining a club or activity, please check daily announcements on FirstClass for meeting times and places. Examples of clubs and activities offered include (but are not limited to):

Amnesty International This is for those who want to make a difference in human rights around the world.
The Environment Club  This is one of the most active clubs at the school.  Students have made several significant changes to the way the school manages its resources.  The Club works closely with CISPA’s Sustainable Development Committee.
Interact  A Rotary-sponsored service club for young people. Interact gives students an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects. The Club performs projects each year to serve the community or further international understanding.
Upper School Student Council The USSC, a student-run organization composed of elected representatives, organizes activities for more than 700 students from Grades 7-12.  The Council acts as a liaison among the school administration, clubs, and student body to help increase understanding and cooperation. The Council promotes school spirit, raises awareness of school matters related to the welfare of students and is a forum for student expression. Students are elected for a one-year term and may stand for re-election the following year to ensure continuity.  Council members gain valuable communication and leadership skills that will benefit them in any career. Events organized by the Council also count toward the IB CAS requirement.

Intramurals  In addition to clubs, the school operates an Intramural Programme to maximize student participation.  Students compete in a controlled environment where fair play and sportsmanship are common goals.  LS intramurals are part of the general ECA programme.  In the US, students on the Athletic Council organize all intramurals. In past years these have included basketball, soccer and floor hockey.

 ECAs – Lower School

US and LS Activities Coordinator:             Simon Joyce

Extra-curricular activities (ECAs) provide students and staff with the opportunity to work together in a fun, non-academic environment.  Teachers and instructors offer activities that meet the needs and interests of CDNIS students.  In addition, for students in Grades 3 or below, ECAs provide access to organized sports, as students cannot join competitive sports teams until Grade 4.

Four types of ECAs are offered:

  • Teacher-led ECAs that occur during the lunch break;
  • Year-long activities offered by teachers, such as the Choir and Chess Club;
  • Sports teams that train and compete against other international schools; and
  • Paid ECAs presented by an external instructor.

Students sign up for ECAs twice each year in early September and in December through http://sites.cdnis.edu.hk/school/lseca/.  Watch the Flash for more information.
